Bioinformatics ~ Special Degree Program ~ Department of Plant Sciences ~ University of Colombo

             The Department of Plant Sciences, Faculty of Science provides enormous contribution in making outstanding Scientists that eventually brighten the Nation’s pride. The Department has been conducting many Special Degree Programs in order to increase the emphasis of the quality of education provided. "Bioinformatics" is one of the latest technologies in which the Department sheds its resources to reflect among its students. Temporary Assistant Lecturer Miss Charunie Rathnayake has sent us a precious article on the Special Degree Course “Bioinformatics” presented to the students of UOC by the Department of Plant Sciences. We the students of UOC send our heartfelt thanks to Miss Charunie Rathnayake for her contribution to the voice of Colombo.


             Bioinformatics is the application of Computer Science and Information Technology to the field of Biology and Medicine.
            It is applicable in a great variety of disciplines such as Molecular Biotechnology, Drug Designing, Genome Mapping, Evolutionary Biology, Biodiversity Conservation and many more.
            Department of Plant Sciences (UOC) introduced a Special Degree program in Bioinformatics in year 2006/2007, being the first state University to unfold a newly emerging multidisciplinary field in modern Biology, to the young and talented minds of Sri Lanka. This is a degree program consisting of course modules offered by the Department of Plant Sciences, Department of Zoology and University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC), covering areas such as Algorithms, Databases and Information Systems, Web Technologies, Artificial Intelligence and Soft Computing, Information and Computation Theory, Software Engineering, Data Mining, Image Processing, Modeling and Simulation, Biostatistics and Multivariate Analysis. Past graduates of this Special Degree Program have excelled in generating new knowledge and new computational tools not only locally but internationally.
